ITERATIONS 2024 - Workshop Life in 256KB
Over deze workshop: 'Life in 256KB' is een lezing/workshop die deelnemers door een ecologisch overzicht van het internet leidt.
Wat we gaan doen: we zullen enkele milieueffecten van computage bespreken, echte voorbeelden van databeperking verkennen en ons laten inspireren door webprojecten die alternatieve relaties met technologie onderzoeken. Ten slotte gaan we strategieën voor front-end en contentgerichte optimalisatie gebruiken om solarvriendelijke websites te maken met een datalimiet van 256 KB per persoon. Elke deelnemer heeft de mogelijkheid om zijn datalimiet te combineren, uit te wisselen of te ruilen om meer complexe ideeën te realiseren.
Wat we nodig hebben: deelnemers dienen basiskennis te hebben van HTML/CSS, beeldbewerkingssoftware en een teksteditor naar keuze.
Deze workshop is ontworpen door Bri Griffin van rhizome.org voor het Grey Area Festival 10. Bri Griffin is een community-ontwerper en strategist. Ze richten zich op onderzoek en programmering voor digitale kunstpublieken. Hun werk combineert gemeenschapsfacilitatie met advies over ervaringontwerp. Bri herontwerpt omgevingen om ethisch, toegankelijk en inclusief te zijn en is sterk betrokken bij online subculturen.
Bri schrijft over verborgen structuren die onze digitale ervaringen vormen, zoals 'lurking'. Met hun praktijk creëren ze ruimtes waar digitale kunst en cultuur samenkomen. Ze dagen conventionele grenzen uit en pleiten voor een doordachte, verbonden digitale wereld.

About this workshop: 'Life in 256KB' is a lecture/workshop that guides participants through an ecological overview of the internet.
What we’ll be doing: we’ll discuss some of the environmental effects of computing, explore real-world cases of data limitation, and get inspired by web projects that focus on alternative relationships with technology. Finally, we’ll use strategies for front-end / content-focused optimisation to create solar-friendly websites with a data budget of 256kb per person. Each participant has the option to combine, exchange, or barter their data budget in order to create more complex ideas.
What we’ll need: participants should be aware of basic HTML/CSS, image manipulation or editing software, and a text editor of their choice.

They focus on research and programming for digital art audiences. Their work blends community facilitation with experience design consulting.
